Another update at last.
There's good news: first off, there is no
bone infection! Secondly, the progression of healing of the several
open wounds in Steve's left foot is quite remarkable, and in fact even
the doctor was quite surprised to see how well the wounds have healed in
just a week.
Now for the bad news... Steve has a condition known as Charcot foot
in the left foot, in addition to the sores we've been battling for so
long. What that means is, simply put, this: the bones within his foot
are very weak: they're actually swollen somewhat and the whole foot is
kind of engorged with blood. The bones are very soft due to this
condition, and they need a great deal of time to heal, just as if he had
completely smashed his foot bones and needed time to let them knit up.
If he puts *any* weight on them whatsoever at this point, they could
collapse entirely. Needless to say we want to avoid this.
The condition is related to and partly caused by advanced neuropathy
(that is, dead nerves in the foot area). Steve has had no sensation in
his feet for over ten years. He's only 33, so this may tell you just how
badly he was caring for his diabetes before this. Since he's been in
the hospital, things have greatly improved, and he is trying hard to
make the changes that have to be made, for him to keep his blood sugar
under control. The biggest difference between how things have gone
before, and this time, is that now Steve really wants to get better.
It's been a very difficult time for us, but we're relieved to know
that there will be no need for amputation or even surgery of any kind -
even a wound vac is going to be unnecessary if we can just get the
wounds closed and keep Steve off his bad foot completely. We also can
look forward to not having to continually treat various sores on his
foot, if we can just keep his blood sugar in check and get him adjusted
to a diet that lets him manage his diabetes rather than ignoring it.
All in all I feel like we've been granted another chance, one that I
am truly, deeply grateful for. I continue to pray that this "wake up
call" will stick with Steve and that he'll be able to make permanent
changes to how he takes care of himself.
Thank you all for your prayers and well wishes! We'll let you know
when Steve's able to come him. Until then I have furniture to arrange so
that his computer can be in the bedroom with him :D

The whole change for the better is going to be a big family effort. You are all in my thoughts.
Sad he doesn't get a wound vac though. Those are awesome.
