Several of us from Ronin have been playing some STOL - we have a fleet R O N I N (we really wanted to get rid of the spaces but the name wasn't available )
My character is Obi@Zenobi if you'd like to get in touch in game - fleet invites to any who'd like them

Was looking at some videos of gameplay...ship combat seems neat, altho it did seem to take a LOOOOOONG time to kill anything. I like the idea of being able to customize the loadout of your ship, etc.
Ground combat.....eh. It seemed very clumsy. People don't normally stand facing each other blasting away with rifles. You use concealment/cover, etc. It looked forced, very plastic.
How stable are the servers? How populated are they? I really enjoyed my time in Warhammer, but sometimes it was hard to find anyone else.
Any comments? I'm mildly tempted to try it out (I wish there was a trial), but I would need a lot more information before I plop down $50.

I'm just now getting far enough in to start to appreciate the depth of the game. It is SO customizable - not only yourself and your ship (or ships) but you also equip and train your crew - you run around with a pocket 5 man - they will take care of themselves or you can direct them in the fight.
However you are correct that the ground combat is a bit clunky yet. At the lofty level of 8 (out of 50 lol), the air fights are getting more interesting, so I'm hoping the ground ones will as well - it won't change the physics of the movement but might at least make them not all seem so similar in the mechanics of the fight.
One thing I do like about the game so far is the grouping mechanics - you just zone into a space and are grouped with whoever else is there and the fights scale according to how many are around (although I have had some issues when I happened to be the only one there)
As far as stability goes, I think it's excellent for as new as it is. Blizzard has rougher patches than this as a brand new game. There is a touch of lag from time to time but they are adding capacity this weekend.
I'm still a nub but overall I'm having fun with it.

Hah! it seems my good words in terms of stability hexed the game The server dropped a couple of hours ago and is still off line as of this post.
On a lighter note, I figured out the odd ground combat mechanics - as long as you have a target, you'll face them - clearing the target allows full and free movement. I'm thinking this is related to the flanking bonus - if you can manage to get behind a target, you'll do more damage - it still is going to take some getting used to I think.

Does anyone know if they have plans to institute a free trial option? I'd like to check it out, but like Spec, not really interested in "investing" in something I'm not sure of yet.

I don't know if regular boxes got them but the CE has 3 10 day trial keys. Only one of mine left.

Addik - we look forward to you joining us :)
As far as free trials goes, I'm not aware of any just yet (outside of the "CE" mentioned ones by Addik... not sure what CE means though - I waited for launch day...). If it was me releasing the game, I'd wait for complete stability and accurate capacity projections before doing anything that would jeopardize the game - I'm guessing it might be a bit.

Collector's Edition. I tried to cancel it but it was too late. Came with the TV series version of the TNG uniform (plus the Borg bridge officer for preordering from amazon)
